Diaper Rash Complications: When to Seek Help
Most diaper rash is minor and resolves with home care. Some cases need medical evaluation.
Yeast Infections (Fungal Rash)
Signs: Intense redness with small pimple-like bumps or pustules, spreads beyond diaper area, doesn't improve with barrier cream.
Treatment: Requires antifungal cream prescribed by doctor. Home care alone won't work.
Bacterial Infection
Signs: Pus, drainage, foul smell, spreading redness, baby has fever.
Treatment: May require antibiotic cream or oral antibiotics. See doctor immediately.
Severe Allergic Reaction
Signs: Rash spreads beyond diaper area, hives, swelling, blistering, baby seems ill.
Treatment: Stop using suspected product. See doctor to rule out serious allergy.
When to Call Pediatrician
- Rash worsens despite 24-48 hours of home care
- Rash spreads beyond diaper area
- Signs of infection present
- Baby has fever
- Baby seems uncomfortable or in pain
- Rash hasn't improved after 3-4 days
