Wetness Indicators: Understanding the Colors
Most quality diapers have wetness indicators that change color. Understanding them helps you know when changes are necessary.
What Are Wetness Indicators?
Thin colored lines running front-to-back on diapers. When dry: one color (usually yellow or white). When wet: change to different color (usually blue or purple).
Why They Matter
At night, you can tell if baby is wet without undressing them. During sleep, use indicators to decide if change is needed.
Limitations
Indicators show wetness but not necessarily that change is urgent. A wet diaper is fine if baby isn't bothered and skin looks healthy.
Reading the Colors
Yellow/Dry: No change needed (unless there's stool)
Blue/Wet: Change when convenient, especially before sleep
Dark Blue/Very Wet: Change soon to prevent leaks and rash
Newborn Stage
In early days, diaper is wet almost constantly. Indicators stay blue. Change every 2-3 hours based on time, not indicator.
Trust Your Instincts
Indicators are helpful but not absolute. Trust your judgment about when baby needs changes based on: time, activity, baby's comfort level.
When Indicators Fail
Sometimes indicators don't work properly. Don't worry—your baby's behavior tells you when changes are needed.
